SUBJECT:    Appointment of Marsha A. Chandler, Sr. Vice Chancellor-Academic Affairs

I am pleased to announce the appointment of Dr. Marsha A. Chandler as
Senior Vice Chancellor-Academic Affairs. Dr. Chandler's appointment was
approved on Friday, May 16, 1997 by The Regents of the University of
California. She will assume her position on August 1, 1997.

Dr. Chandler is a world-renowned scholar of comparative public policy and
has served as dean of the faculty of arts and sciences at the University of
Toronto for the past seven years. Ms. Chandler received her Ph.D. from the
University of North Carolina and her B.A. from the College of the City of
New York.

Dr. Chandler has received numerous awards and honors, including the YWCA
Women of Distinction Award in 1994. Dr. Chandler's outstanding research
achievements were honored in 1995, when she was made a fellow of the Royal
Society of Canada, the most distinguished academic accolade for scholars in
Canada. She has played a very active role in university and community life
in Toronto, and has served on numerous boards.

Dr. Chandler has compiled an administrative profile no less impressive than
her academic one. Admired for her energy, leadership and unswerving
commitment to the maintenance of quality, she is considered an exceptional
administrator.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank Interim Sr. Vice Chancellor
Attiyeh for his outstanding leadership during this interim period. His
steady hand and clear vision have served the university well in a time of
transition.

Please join me in welcoming Dr. Chandler to her new position and thanking
Vice Chancellor Attiyeh for his service and commitment.

Robert C. Dynes
