SUBJECT: | Long Term Care Presentations |
Following several extensive consultations and reviews, UC Employee
Benefits Plan Administration has announced that the University will
not sponsor a long term care insurance plan. It is acknowledged,
however, that long term care insurance remains a topic of concern
among many UC employees.
Long-term care involves a wide variety of services for individuals
with prolonged physical illnesses, disabilities, or cognitive
disorders. Services may include assistance with daily living
activities, home health care, adult day care, respite care, and care
in a nursing home. Many long term care insurance policies are
currently available and may be purchased on an individual basis.
The State of California Department of Aging's Health Insurance
Counseling and Advocacy Program (HICAP) provides a wealth of information
on long term care issues. The program offers counseling on long term care
options and insurance plan provisions. Services are free and counselors do
not recommend or sell insurance policies. Information may be obtained by
contacting a local HICAP counselor at 1-619-565-8772. HICAP information
packets, which describe the California Partnership for Long Term Care, and
a list of Insurance Companies approved for participation in the
California Partnership, may be obtained by calling 1-800-434-0222.
Though the University is not endorsing or sponsoring a long term care
plan, presentations have been scheduled as a service to employees who
may be interested in obtaining additional information on long term
care insurance options. The presentations will be held on the UCSD
campus in the Price Center Theater and are scheduled as follows:
Wednesday, May 7, 9:00 a.m. - 11:00 a.m.:
A representative from the California Department of Aging will present
a general overview of long term care issues, insurance policies, and
provisions.
Wednesday, May 28, 8:30 a.m. to noon:
Harold J. Simon, M.D., Ph.D., Chief, Division of International Health
and Cross-Cultural Medicine at the UCSD School of Medicine will give a
presentation on long term care. Representatives from the California
Public Employees Retirement System (CalPERS) and the Teachers
Insurance & Annuity Association/College Retirement Equities Fund
(TIAA/CREF) will discuss their long term care insurance programs.
All UCSD faculty, staff employees, and retirees are welcome to attend
the presentations.
