HUMAN RESOURCES

January 20, 1998

ALL AT UCSD (Including the UCSD Medical Centers)

SUBJECT:    The UCSD 1997-98 Staff Employee of the Year Award Program

I am pleased to announce the nomination period for this year's staff
Employee of the Year Award Program. The purpose of this program is to
recognize and celebrate the outstanding achievements and meritorious service
of our staff employees. Ten awards will be given: one award of $2,000
(pre-tax) for the "Outstanding Staff Employee" and nine awards of $1,000
(pre-tax) for "Exemplary Service." All ten awardees will have their names
inscribed on the perpetual plaque which is prominently displayed in the
Human Resources Department at Torrey Pines Center-South, Suite 265-A.

Any UCSD employee who has passed the probationary period may submit
nominations. A panel of nine, appointed by the Chancellor, Vice
Chancellors, and Chief Executive Officer, will review all nominations and
recommend awardees to the Chancellor. Awards will be made by Chancellor
Dynes at a special ceremony to be held in the spring.

This program allows employees to be acknowledged for special recognitions
for their outstanding service and contributions. Its success depends on
your willingness to take the necessary time to initiate and/or endorse the
nomination of a staff employee whom you believe to be truly deserving of an
award. A nomination form is attached for your convenience.

Nominations will be received at the Campus Human Resources Department at
Torrey Pines Center-South and at the Medical Center Human Resources
Department. For full consideration nominations must be received by February
27, 1998. Electronic nominations will be considered provided all nominating
material and personal electronic endorsements from the nominators are
received by the deadline. Please send your electronic nominations to
nominate@ucsd.edu.

Please follow the guidelines below in preparing your nomination:

1. Nominees must be a member of the UCSD Professional and Support Staff
  Program.

2. Nominees must have completed the six month probationary period.

3. Each nomination must include a Principal Nominator and two endorsements.
  Individuals may serve as a Principal Nominator for only one nomination;
however, a principal Nominator may endorse other nominations. All multiple
nominations submitted by a single Principal Nominator will be invalidated.

4. Only one employee per nomination form may be submitted.

5. In order to give all nominees adequate opportunity, length of narrative
statement, should not exceed 300 words. Supplemental materials will not be
considered.

6. Satisfactory performance of all assigned job duties is insufficient
criteria to be considered for an award. Nominees should demonstrate
exemplary performance of work-related responsibilities at UCSD. For
example, if the employee is representing the University in community
service activities, these efforts would qualify as work-related.
Nominations without supporting statements will not be considered.

7. The names of nominators will not be revealed and nominating materials
will not be returned.

Please submit nominations by February 27, 1998. Award recipients will be
announced in late March.
