SUBJECT: UCSD Hosts "PREVIEW DAY '98" High school seniors and prospective transfer students, their families,
school counselors and teachers are invited to "Explore UCSD!" at Preview Day 1998, Saturday, November 14, from 8:30 a.m. until 2:30 p.m. This annual event is expected to draw between 3,000 and 5,000 visitors to UCSD for the day to attend presentations on a variety of university-related topics, visit with students and faculty, and tour the campus. A Middle School component to this year's Preview Day will include college preparation workshops for students and parents at 10:00 a.m. Preview Day is an opportunity to showcase the UCSD campus, its academic departments, services and student organizations. Co-sponsored by Associated Students of UCSD, it is the largest recruitment event of the year for the Office of Admissions and Outreach.
Academic departments, student support services and student clubs and
organizations will participate in an Information Fair on Library Walk,
while ongoing information sessions cover the five undergraduate colleges,
housing, money matters, admissions, majors, athletics and campus life. Faculty members from a variety of departments will discuss academic
expectations, and student panels will focus on both freshman and transfer
student questions. Student tour guides will lead campus tours throughout
the event. As a special treat, Thurgood Marshall College Provost Cecil
Lytle will perform a series of Beethoven, Chopin and Gershwin piano
selections in the Price Center Plaza during session breaks. "Preview Day is an invaluable opportunity for students and parents to
meet with our faculty, staff and students," says Mae Brown, UCSD's director of Admissions and Outreach. "We encourage everyone interested
in UCSD to join us for a day filled with workshop sessions, faculty
presentations, campus tours and fun. We're looking forward to showing
prospective students all of the things that make UCSD such a special
place. We encourage our campus community to take part in providing a
positive experience for these students and their families." The purpose of Preview Day is to give students and their families an inside look at life on the UCSD campus. From past experience, students who attend the event tend to make more informed decisions regarding their choice of college during the November application filing period. Visiting the campus has proven to be a major factor in a student's decision to enroll at UCSD if admitted.
