SUBJECT:    Disability Awareness Week at UCSD

I encourage faculty, staff and students to participate in the Disability
Awareness events scheduled during the week of October 12-16, 1998. The
purpose of these activities is to increase the awareness of, and
sensitivity to, the abilities and needs of people with disabilities at UCSD.

Lectures or demonstrations are scheduled for October 12, 13, 14, and 16 at
the Price Center Gallery A from noon to 1:30 p.m. On Thursday, October 15,
from 11:30 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., "A Celebration of Abilities" in the Price
Center Plaza will feature entertainers, Mark Goffeney, Patty
Hutchings and Amy Lynn Kanner, who were enthusiastically received last
year. In addition, the movie, "Born on the Fourth of July," will be shown
at 7:00 p.m. and 10:00 p.m. on Tuesday, October 13, in the Price Center
Theatre; and a film documentary, "Double the Trouble, Twice the Fun", will
be shown at 4:00 p.m. on Thursday, October 15, at the Cross-Cultural Center.

In recognition of this annual event, I am approving one hour of
administrative leave with pay during the week so that employees may attend
Disability Awareness events. Supervisors are encouraged to allow employees
one hour of release time to attend when the absence does not infringe upon
the performance of required job duties.

Questions regarding the events may be directed to Barry J. Niman, Manager
of the Employee Rehabilitation Program, at 534-6743 or nimanb@ucsd.edu, or
to the UCSD Community Advocates for Disability Rights and Education at
cadre@ucsd.edu.
