Preuss School Principal Named

I am extremely pleased to announce that Doris Alvarez, award-winning
principal of Hoover High School, has agreed to become the first
principal of The Preuss School (the UCSD Model School).

One of the most distinguished educators in San Diego, Dr. Alvarez has
been the principal of Hoover High School since 1987. Previous to that
she was a vice principal at Correia Junior High School in San Diego,
district counselor for the San Diego Unified School District, and a
counselor at Gompers Junior High School.

In recognition of her educational leadership, the National Association
of Secondary School Principals (NASSP) named Dr. Alvarez National
Principal of the Year in 1997. Other prestigious national honors she
has received include the 1995-1996 Milken Educator Award, the Freedoms
Foundation Meritorious George Washington Honor Medal for Individual
Achievement in 1996, and the Metlife/NASSP California Principal of the
Year Award in 1996.

Dr. Alvarez received her A.B. and M.S. (Counseling) degrees from
San Diego State University, and her Ph.D. in Education jointly from
Claremont Graduate School and SDSU.

Dr. Alvarez will begin the work of curricular planning, staff and
student recruitment, and administrative organization of The Preuss
School in December of 1998. The Preuss School will open next fall in
temporary quarters with a charter class of 100 students. The School's
permanent facility, scheduled to be finished by the fall of 2000, will
house 700 students in grades six through twelve when enrollment reaches
steady state in 2003.

She has the experience, the vision and the commitment necessary to insure
that The Preuss School will be a model for how best to prepare students
for a university education and we are fortunate to be able to count on
her leadership in this effort.
