ALL FACULTY AT UCSD

SUBJECT:    Call for Proposals 1999-2000 Faculty Career Development Program (FDCP) for Assistant Professors in the Ladder-Ranks and Assistant Professors in Residence

PURPOSE:
To support junior faculty efforts in research or creative activities in
order to enhance progress towards the Associate Professor level.

ELIGIBILITY:
FCDP is open to all Assistant Professors in the Ladder-Ranks and
Assistant Professors In Residence. An awardee must be in junior
status during the award period of 1999-2000.

DESCRIPTION:
Approximately $100,000 has historically been provided by UC Office of
the President for this program which is administered at UCSD by the
Office of Academic Affirmative Action. Typically, proposals request
salary for one quarter of released time ($13,000-$18,000 depending on
salary level) in order to concentrate efforts on research or other
creative activity. Other awards in the past have also included support
for summer research, research supplies/equipment, salary for a research
assistant, and travel expenses related to a research project.

SELECTION CRITERIA:
Applicants should be approaching consideration for advancement to the
Associate Professor level and regarded as highly promising and deserving
of this opportunity to enhance their research and scholarship record.
In addition, 1999-2000 program awards will particularly focus on those
who can clearly demonstrate that extraordinary commitment(s) in other
areas has reduced the amount of time available for the research or other
creative activity required for successful advancement. These other areas
might include, for example, student advising, teaching, curriculum
development, supervision of independent study students, committee
service, and outreach activities including efforts to enhance the
diversity of the campus. Preference will be given to those who have
not previously received an award.

APPLICATION MATERIALS:
The Call for Proposals, the Applicant Summary Sheet, and the Chair's
Evaluation Form are available on the web at
http://academicaffairs.ucsd.edu/fcdp

APPLICATION DEADLINE:

REVIEW OF APPLICATIONS:
Proposals will be reviewed by the Affirmative Action Committee of the
Academic Senate, and recommendations will be submitted to Senior Vice
Chancellor-Academic Affairs Marsha A. Chandler in March 1999. Applicants
will be notified of the results early in April 1999.
