Today I have appointed a committee to conduct a five-year review of John
Alksne's performance as Dean of the School of Medicine and Vice Chancellor
for Health Sciences. The review committee's members are:
Mark H. Ellisman, Professor, Neurosciences (chair)
Wayne H. Akeson, Professor, Orthopedics
Katherine Calvo, Student, Medical Scientist Training Program
Winifred Cox, Assistant Vice Chancellor, University Communications
Edward Dennis, Professor, Chemistry/Biochemistry
David B. Hoyt, Professor, Surgery
Sumiyo Kastelic, Director, UCSD Medical Center
Laura Schreibman, Professor, Psychology
Michael Shannon, Student, UCSD School of Medicine
Roger Y. Tsien, Professor, Pharmacology
Ajit P. Varki, Professor, Medicine
The official charge to the committee is to investigate "opinions and
evaluation from department chairs, faculty, students, staff, and (where
relevant) outside referees . . . [on such matters] as administration of
personnel, financial resources, student matters, curricula, and support
activities; fostering affirmative action objectives; effective leadership
within the unit, with campus, and systemwide units, and with the community"
(UCSD, PPM 230-3:II-E).
The members of the review committee and I welcome your assessment of Vice
Chancellor Alksne's performance. Please feel free to consult with others
in your department/unit who may have relevant information. Please write or
e-mail your comments to Mark Ellisman, the committee chair, at mail code
0608. All comments received will be kept confidential. Comments may also
be sent "in strict confidence" directly to me, Chancellor Robert C. Dynes,
at mail code 0005. The text of these "in strict confidence" letters will
be redacted by the review committee's chair and myself before they are
shared with the entire review committee.
We would appreciate receiving your comments by February 5, 1999.
