SUBJECT:    Reappointment of Professor Peter H. Smith as Director of Latin American Studies

It is my pleasure to announce the reappointment of Professor Peter Smith
as Director of Latin American Studies through Summer, 2000. In this
capacity, he serves as special adviser to me on Latin American affairs
and reports to Vice Chancellor for Research Richard Attiyeh.

Since beginning his appointment as Director in 1994, Director Smith has
provided excellent leadership in promoting and developing Latin American
Studies teaching and research programs throughout the UCSD campus. In
response to student demand, an undergraduate major in Latin American
Studies was established. The M.A. program has continued to be refined
and improved. Long-term collaborations with the Center for U.S.-Mexican
Studies, Center for Iberian and Latin American Studies, Institute of the
Americas, Graduate School of International Relations and Pacific Studies,
Institute on Global Conflict and Cooperation, San Diego State University,
and San Diego Dialogue have been fostered. Outreach has been strengthened
through the production and broadcast of a UCSD-TV program, the initiation
of a special institute for public school teachers, the development and
enhancement of a Latin American Studies Website, and distribution of a
Latin American Studies newsletter to the San Diego media and community.
Grant funding has been garnered for curriculum development, student
fellowships and research, faculty research activities, international
training programs, and conferences.

We are grateful to Peter for his contributions to date and look forward
to his continuing to build Latin American Studies on the campus.
