OFFICE OF THE SENIOR VICE
CHANCELLOR - ACADEMIC AFFAIRS

February 2, 1998

ALL UCSD FACULTY

SUBJECT:    COMMENCEMENT COMMITTEE

An ad hoc committee has been established to advise the Chancellor and the
Senior Vice Chancellor-Academic Affairs regarding the issues, pros and cons,
and optional formats for graduation commencement at UCSD, and, if possible,
to recommend a particular format for this year. Following last year's
successful commencement activities with President Clinton, two important
models will be considered, together with any other models which may be
suggested. The first model is UCSD's traditional format of having only
individual and separate college/school ceremonies. The second model is to
have one large convocation with a speaker attended by all graduating students
followed by individual college/school ceremonies as was done last year.
Because of the timing for the upcoming 1998 graduation, the committee needs
to make an initial report by mid-February. The faculty are invited to submit
comments and opinions to the committee as soon as possible, either in writing
to Commencement Committee Chair David R. Miller, Mail Code 0001, or by email
to jrieber@ucsd.edu. In addition, you may discuss the issues with any of the
committee members listed below:

  Director Winifred Cox, University Communications
  Student Genoa Ferguson, ASUCSD Representative
