OFFICE OF THE ASSISTANT VICE CHANCELLOR -
HUMAN RESOURCES

February 27, 1998

KEY ADMINISTRATORS / KEY SUPPORT STAFF

SUBJECT:    New Minimum Wage

The proposed adjustment of UCSD's minimum wage to $5.75 per hour, which was
announced in a campus notice dated January 20, has been approved. The
effective date of the increase is March 1, 1998 for employees paid monthly,
and February 22, 1998 for employees paid biweekly.

The only payroll title affected by this increase is the Assistant II (TC
4921) which has an existing salary range minimum of $5.15 per hour. Any
students who are currently employed at a rate lower than $5.75 per hour
will be centrally adjusted to the new minimum over the weekend of March
7-8. Key contacts will be sent a report listing all affected employees by
department. No action is required on the part of department personnel to
implement this change in PPS. As the change is being processed too late to
affect the PTR's, Payroll will also override the rates shown on the March
PTR's centrally.

Additionally, there may be by-agreement rates which have been negotiated
reflecting an equivalent hourly rate that is less than the new minimum. Key
Administrators are advised to review any by-agreement rates which have been
negotiated to ensure they reflect a minimum compensation level of $5.75 per
hour and make adjustments where necessary.

Please share this information with supervisors and affected employees in
your area and update your Title and Pay Plan to reflect the new range
minimum for Assistant II. If you have any questions regarding the above,
you may contact Judy Johnson at jjohnson@ucsd.edu, or at extension 40986.
