SUBJECT: | Staff Affirmative Action Training Program, 1998-99, Call for Individual Applications |
I am pleased to announce the call for individual applications
for the 1998-99 fiscal year. This program provides funds for
training opportunities for career employees seeking a
promotion or career change who have completed their
probationary period, and have "met expectations" or better on
their last performance evaluation. All applicants will be
considered without regard to gender or ethnicity. The implementation
of the program will be in compliance with Equal Opportunity/Affirmative
Action requirements and other UC policies.
Annually, we seek to fund several proposals (last year, 79 individual
applications were awarded funds with a $500 maximum award for
each individual). This year, the Staff Affirmative Action Training
Program Committee is selecting individuals who are interested in a
promotion or career change to one of the following job titles:
MSP Manager
Assistant, Associate, or Senior Development Engineer
MSO II or III
Prin. Administrative Analyst I
Administrative Analyst
Senior Administrative Analyst
___ Assistant I, II, or III
Staff Research Associate I, II, III, or IV
Programmer Analyst I, II, III, or IV
Program Representative I, II, or III
Computer Resource Specialist I or II
Senior or Prin. Electronic Technician
Lab Assistant I or II
Senior Animal Technician
Lead Custodian
Development Technician II, III, or IV
Please note: This year's Committee asks applicants to seek
funding from their departments for the proposed training
prior to submitting their application form.
Employees who aspire to work in any of the job titles
listed above and who meet the criteria are encouraged to
apply. Please thoroughly review the requirements and
selection criteria below before completing the
application. The application form is attached. Eligible
applicants should submit 12 copies of a completed application
form to Human Resources-Equal Opportunity/Staff Affirmative
Action, Mail Code 0923, no later than Monday, April 27, 1998.
The Committee will review the applications and send
notification letters of their decisions on funding by the end
of June 1998. Please direct your questions to Equal

REQUIREMENTS AND SELECTION CRITERIA FOR INDIVIDUAL
APPLICATIONS FOR 1998-99 STAFF AFFIRMATIVE ACTION TRAINING
PROGRAM FUNDS
Requirements:
1. Individual applicants must be interested in promotion
or a career change to one of the targeted job titles.
2. Applicants must have completed their probationary
period.
3. Applicant's most recent performance evaluation must be
"Met Expectations" or better.
4. The proposed activity must occur during the period of
July 1, 1998 through June 30, 1999. Activities that
begin before July 1, 1998 will not be considered.
5. Deadline for receipt of applications is Monday, April
27, 1998. Applications must be complete and accurate.
6. Only requests for tuition/registration fees and
books/materials will be considered. (Do not include
parking, insurance, meals, lodging, transportation,
membership dues, conference fees, or health costs.)
7. Applicants are required to seek funding from their
departments prior to submission of their application.
All awarded funds must be expended by June 30, 1999.
8. An evaluation form, evidence of successful completion,
and original receipts for approved costs must be
submitted upon completion of the awarded activity in
order to receive reimbursement.
Selection Criteria:
1. Does the applicant aspire to be in one of the targeted
job titles?
2. Does the proposed activity relate directly to the
aspired position?
3. Is the proposed activity part of an attainable career
plan for promotion or career change?
4. Have Staff Affirmative Action Training Program funds
been allocated previously to the applicant? If so,
the evaluation submitted in accordance with
Requirement #8 above will be used in consideration of
the application.
5. Has the applicant sought funding from their
department; were other funding sources sought as well?
6. Is the applicant pursuing an advanced degree?
NOTE: Higher priority will be given to individual applicants
who have not yet attained a Bachelor or advanced degree.

UCSD courses are encouraged (i.e., UCSD Extension, Staff
Education & Development, UC Medical Center Training &
Development) yet courses may be taken at any institution

UCSD course, please use the discounted fee (25% discount for
UCSD Extension tuition up to $100 per quarter, or 66%
discount for UCSD general catalog courses).
