SUBJECT:    Hire-A-Youth Summer Internship Program

This mark's UCSD'S 32nd year of participation in the Hire-A-Youth Summer
Internship Program. For those who may not be familiar with this program,
its purpose is to provide work training positions for students, ages 14-16,
who come from economically disadvantaged families. UCSD assumes the
responsibility for providing training and supervision for each enrollee at
no direct cost to the University.

The tentative schedule for this summer calls for participants to start the
week of July 13, 1998. The program will last a minimum of six weeks or a
mandatory 215 hours. The final working day will be mid-August. The youths
are paid minimum wage by the above agency and the work schedule can provide
up to 35 hours per week of employment (Monday through Friday). In
addition, in order to be considered an eligible work site, it is a
requirement of the program that all supervisors who have requested students
attend a supervisors' orientation. Please plan to attend or have an
alternate supervisor in your department attend this orientation as well in
the event of your absence this summer. Updated information on this year's
program will be provided by the Neighborhood House Association as well as
the coordinator for the program on campus. This orientation will be held
on Monday, June 15, 1998 at the Price Center, San Francisco/Santa Cruz Room
at 1:30 p.m.

If you are interested in helping young people successfully enter the world
of work by participating this summer, please complete the attached job
application. If you have more than one location, please complete a
separate form for each location. Please note that your application must be
returned no later Monday, June 1, 1998.
