SUBJECT:    Diversity Address on June 1, 1998

Last fall I appointed a Commission with broad UCSD student, staff
and faculty representation to advise me on issues related to diversity.
I asked this Diversity Commission to engage in wide-ranging
discussions about affirmative action and diversity programs at UCSD.
I sought their recommendations for discarding ineffective programs,
and enhancing or creating programs and strategies that will enable
UCSD productively to pursue its commitment to excellence and diversity.

The Diversity Commission issued its final report in March. Since
then, the Vice Chancellors and I have been studying the Commission's
recommendations, gathering input from a broad campus constituency,
and formulating the steps we must take to insure that UCSD continues
to grow as a culturally diverse community.

On June 1, 1998, at 4:00 p.m., in the Institute of the Americas Auditorium,
I will address the campus community on the important topic of Diversity
at UCSD. The Vice Chancellors will join me for this discussion of actions
stemming from the Diversity Commission Report, and other strategies for
achieving a greater diversity at UCSD.

I appreciate the input on this topic I have received from many
members of the campus community, and I hope you will join us in our
continuing dialogue on this most important issue.
