OFFICE OF THE SENIOR VICE CHANCELLOR- ACADEMIC AFFAIRS February 4, 1999 ALL FACULTY AT UCSD SUBJECT: SIXTH COLLEGE PLANNING COMMITTEE I am very pleased to announce that the following individuals have agreed to serve as members of the Sixth College Planning Committee: FRANCINE D. BERMAN, Department of Computer Science & Engineering (CSE) JAMES G. BRANSON, Department of Physics ANN L. CRAIG, Provost, Eleanor Roosevelt College DAVID G. GUTIERREZ, Department of History WILLIAM B. KRISTAN, Department of Biology DAVID R. MILLER (Chair), Associate Vice Chancellor-Academic Planning & Programs LAURA SCHREIBMAN, Department of Psychology RAND STEIGER, Department of Music JEFFREY STEINDORF (Executive Secretary), Assistant Vice Chancellor- Campus Planning JOSEPH WATSON, Vice Chancellor-Student Affairs In accordance with Academic Senate policies regarding academic planning for new colleges, this is a joint Administrative-Senate Committee, consisting of six Academic Senate members and three members from the Central Administration. Associate Vice Chancellor Miller will serve as Chair of this committee, and Assistant Vice Chancellor Steindorf will serve as the Executive Secretary. The charge to the Committee is to formulate a preliminary academic or thematic plan, which should be a broad sketch of the major objectives and primary directions for the proposed Sixth College. In addition, the Committee is requested to formulate a physical plan of the College in the context of the overall campus building program. The blueprint put forth by the Sixth College Planning Committee in this important initial stage of planning will guide the following two stages in the academic planning process -- the search for and appointment of a founding Provost and the development of a detailed academic plan and the college curriculum. We envision the new College accepting its first students during the Fall of 2001 and opening in Fall 2002. I have requested that the Committee plan to submit its report by the end of May, so that review by Academic Senate committees can be initiated shortly thereafter. Planning Committee Chair Miller will soon be in touch with you to solicit your ideas and comments. Marsha A. Chandler Senior Vice Chancellor |
