MANAGED CARE
March 30, 1999
SCHOOL OF MEDICINE
SUBJECT: Appointment Medical Director, Managed Care
Dear Colleagues:
I am pleased to announce that Lee Giddings, M.D., will be joining UCSD as
the Medical Director, Managed Care on April 1, 1999. With experience as a
practicing physician and a managed care administrator, Dr. Giddings is well
prepared to help us with the complicated medical management issues that
face us.
Most recently Dr. Giddings served as Regional Medical Director for
MedPartners, a national physician practice management company. He obtained
his medical degree from Loma Linda University and joined the Chula Vista
Medical Group in 1973. He is board certified in Family Medicine. In 1990
he led his group to merge with another primary care group in the Chula
Vista area to improve managed care opportunities. Two years later he
successfully negotiated a management services agreement with Pacific
Physician Services to provide managed care contracting and administrative
services for the newly merged primary care group. The medical practice was
later acquired by MedPartners in early 1996, and Dr. Giddings was asked to
assume regional medical management responsibilities for MedPartners' group
practices and IPAs in the Southwest Region. As Medical Director of the UCSD Healthcare Network/MSO, one of the Medical
Group's priorities for Dr. Giddings is to work closely with the clinical
service chiefs to reduce leakage of professional and institutional services
to out-of-network providers. Additionally, he will be working with the
community affiliate primary care physicians to enhance referral
relationships to Medical Group specialists.
I would also like to take this opportunity to thank Seymour Mallis, M.D.,
who has served as the part-time Associate Medical Director, Managed Care,
for the last five years. Dr. Mallis has been instrumental in facilitating
the relationship between the physicians and the managed care health plans
to help improve the quality of care for our managed care members. We
appreciate his years of service and his dedication to UCSD Healthcare.
