CAMPUS NOTICE
University of California, San Diego
OFFICE OF ASSISTANT VICE CHANCELLOR -
ADMINISTRATIVE COMPUTING AND TELECOMMUNICATIONS (ACT)
February 18, 1999
ALL AT UCSD (Including UCSD Medical Center)
SUBJECT: Campus Area Code Change from (619) to (858) on 6/12/99
This is to remind you that the 619 telephone area code will soon be
split into three different area codes based on geographic locations.
The main impact to us from these changes is that the area code of all
main campus and Thornton hospital phones will change from 619 to 858
on June 12, 1999. These changes will not affect the price of calls or
the ability to use the 5-digit dialing between Campus and Medical
Center locations.
Details of the changes were communicated to the campus community several
months ago (see the June 29, 1998 notice below) and are also available
at: http://www-act.ucsd.edu/telecom/area-codes.html (including answers
to a variety of frequently asked questions).
I encourage you to review the information and prepare as necessary. For
example, here are some actions that you may want to take:
- Change stationary, business cards, and advertising to reflect the new
area code.
- Notify friends, relatives, business clients and customers of the new
area code.
- Update fax machine group calling lists that have numbers affected by
the change.
- Reprogram speed dialers, auto dialers, alarms and PBX (private phone
systems) to reflect the change (contact your equipment vendor for
assistance).
- Reprogram outdial lists on personal computers that have numbers
affected by the change.
- Check with your wireless phone and paging service providers as well
as Internet Service Providers to see if reprogramming is required.
If you have any questions please contact the ACT Help Desk at x41853.
Thank you.

UCSD
CAMPUS NOTICE
University of California, San Diego
OFFICE OF ASSISTANT VICE CHANCELLOR -
ADMINISTRATIVE COMPUTING AND TELECOMMUNICATIONS (ACT)
June 29, 1998
ALL AT UCSD (Including UCSD Medical Center)
SUBJECT: New telephone area codes
The California Public Utilities Commission recently approved a three-way
geographic split of the 619 telephone area code. The approved boundaries
will divide the 619 region into three sections (northern, central and
eastern) and will result in the creation of two new area codes. The
details are as follows:
- Central section (619) - This area will retain the 619 area code. Some
of the communities in this area include the downtown portion of the city
of San Diego and small portions of Lemon Grove and National City. The
UCSD Medical Center is located in this portion.
- Northern section (858) - This area will receive the new 858 area code.
It will begin service on June 12, 1999. Some of the communities in this
area include Rancho Santa Fe, Solana Beach, Del Mar, La Jolla, Poway and
the northern portion of the city of San Diego. The UCSD main campus and
the Thornton Hospital are located in this portion.
- Eastern section (935) - This area will receive the new 935 area code.
It will begin service on June 10, 2000. Some of communities in this area
include Coronado, La Mesa, Chula Vista, Lakeside, El Cajon, Alpine, Pine
Valley, Campo, Jacumba, Imperial Beach, Santee, the majority of both Lemon
Grove and National City and the southern portion of the city of San Diego.
The main impact to us from these changes is that the area code of all main
campus and Thornton hospital phones will change from 619 to 858 in about a
year. These changes will not affect the price of calls or the ability to
use the 5-digit dialing between Campus and Medical Center locations.
We are informing you of these changes well in advance to provide ample
time for changes that you may need to make (e.g., printing business
cards, stationery, brochures, etc.)
If you have any questions please contact the ACT Help Desk at x41853.
Thank you.
