OFFICE OF THE SENIOR VICE CHANCELLOR ACADEMIC AFFAIRS July 20, 1999 ALL FACULTY KEY ADMINISTRATORS SUBJECT: New Departments in the Jacobs School of Engineering I am pleased to bring to your attention a recent organizational change in the Jacobs School of Engineering. Effective July 1, 1999, the Department of Applied Mechanics and Engineering Science (AMES) was partitioned into two new departments: Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering (MAE) and Structural Engineering (SE). The new UCSD departments were approved by UC Office of the President on March 23, 1999. Juan Lasheras will serve as the first chair of the Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering, and Freider Seible will chair the Department of Structural Engineering. If you would like to know more about the research and teaching activities of MAE and SE, you might want to visit their web sites (www-mae.ucsd.edu; www.structures.ucsd.edu). I am confident that the campus can look forward to a bright future for these new departments, and I hope you will join me in extending best wishes to their faculty, staff, and students. Marsha A.
