SUBJECT: APPOINTMENT OF UNIVERSITY LIBRARIAN
I am delighted to announce that Brian E. C. Schottlaender, Associate University Librarian for Collections and Technical Services at the University of California, Los Angeles, has been appointed University Librarian at UCSD. He will assume his new duties in September 1999. Brian has been UCLA's Associate University Librarian for Collections and Technical Services since 1993 with administrative responsibility for five departments, a branch library and three program areas with operating budgets totaling $5 million. He has administered a collections budget surpassing $9 million and has coordinated the UCLA Library's government-funded grants initiatives. He joined UCLA's library system in 1984 after working in the libraries of the University of Arizona (1981-1984) and Indiana University (1980-1981).
Brian comes to UCSD with a national reputation for pioneering work in digital library access. He has been a key player in the establishment of the California Digital Library (CDL) of the University of California, a collaborative effort of the nine UC campuses that houses systems supporting the University's shared online collections. He serves as Senior Associate to CDL's University Librarian and is responsible for primary content development, with particular emphasis on the Online Archive of California.
An alumnus of Indiana University (M.L.S., 1980) and the University of Texas at Austin (B.A. ampla cum laude in German literature, 1974), Brian serves on editorial and review boards of The Journal of Internet Cataloging.
Brian will take over the duties of University Librarian which were formerly held by Jerry Lowell. Those additional responsibilities which Jerry had as Associate Vice Chancellor, Academic Information Technology, will be discussed with Brian once he has arrived on campus.
I hope that you will join me in welcoming Brian to the campus.
I'd also like to express my appreciation to some key contributors to this successful recruitment. First, Phyllis Mirsky, who has been truly outstanding as the Interim University Librarian. Second, the Librarian Search Committee who put an enormous amount of effort into selecting a truly first-rate candidate from a very impressive pool. And finally, all the staff in the library, media center and academic computing who provided valuable input during the selection process. I thank you all.
