SUBJECT:  Y2K Alert: Just a few more weeks...

As of now, practically all UCSD mission-critical systems (e.g., Medical Center, Payroll, Financial, Student, utilities) and many others have been successfully tested and were found to be Y2K ready. Based on this information and after meeting with external utility suppliers (e.g., electricity, water, gas) we feel confident that the likelihood of a major Y2K-related campuswide impact is minimal. Detailed status reports are available on the campus Y2K site at: http://y2k.ucsd.edu.

As mentioned in previous campus notices, there are many other systems that are maintained by individual departments, faculty or staff. By their very nature, such systems can only be checked and tested by the people who support and use them.

Although these systems may not be mission-critical from a campuswide perspective, they may be very critical to those who rely upon them. Affected systems and equipment may include research equipment, desktop workstations and software, local recharge billing systems, etc. Responsibility for assuring Y2K readiness rests with the individuals who use and rely on these systems and equipment. I urge you to promptly identify the systems for which you are responsible, prioritize their importance, and take the proper steps to assure their compliance.

There are several resources that can help you in the process. Many campus units have technical staff who may be of some assistance. Most vendors have posted on their web sites specific Y2K information regarding their products. The campus Y2K website (http://y2k.ucsd.edu) contains a lot of useful information, including the names of departmental Y2K coordinators.
