1999 Commencement Speaker

We are pleased to announce that UCSD founding faculty member
Dr. Irwin Jacobs, CEO and chairman of QUALCOMM Incorporated,
will be the commencement speaker at the 1999 all-campus graduation
ceremonies on June 12.

Dr. Jacobs became one of the first members of the UCSD engineering faculty
when he was recruited from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT)
in 1966 as a Professor of Information and Computer Science. In his six
years on the UCSD faculty, he helped develop the engineering programs in
electrical and computer engineering and participated in the recruitment of
faculty to departments throughout the young school.

In 1968 he and fellow UCSD faculty member Dr. Andrew Viterbi co-founded
LINKABIT, which became M/A-COM LINKABIT in 1980. He left that firm in
1985 and co-founded QUALCOMM Inc., a global supplier of digital wireless
communications products and technologies. Its products include the world's
leading two-way mobile satellite communications and tracking system,
wireless products and services, and E-Mail software. Headquartered in
San Diego, QUALCOMM's 8,000 employees work in 28 locations throughout the
globe.

All four of Irwin and Joan Jacobs' children have attended UC schools, and
the couple have been long-time supporters of UCSD. Dr. Jacobs is a
trustee of the UC San Diego Foundation and member of the Council of
Advisors to the School of Engineering. QUALCOMM is a founding member of
the UCSD Center for Wireless Communications. In 1981, Irwin and Joan
established an endowed chair in Information and Computer Science, the first
endowed chair at UCSD and one of the earliest examples of private
philanthropy to the campus. In 1998 the UCSD School of Engineering was named
in honor of Dr. and Mrs. Jacobs, in recognition of their $15 million in
endowment support for the School.

Dr. Jacobs received his Bachelor degree from Cornell University and his M.S.
and Sc.D. degrees from MIT. He is a member of the National Academy of
Engineering and received the National Medal of Technology in 1994.

The All-University Commencement Ceremony will be held at 10:00 a.m. on
Saturday, June 12, at the RIMAC Field. The individual college ceremonies
will be at the following times and locations:

The School of Medicine's graduation ceremony will be on Sunday, June 6,
at 11:00 a.m., on the lawn of the Basic Science Building.
