EQUAL OPPORTUNITY/STAFF AFFIRMATIVE ACTION

June 22, 1999

KEY ADMINISTRATORS / KEY SUPPORT STAFF (Excluding Hospital)

SUBJECT:    Hire-A-Youth Program

This marks UCSD's 33rd year of participation in the Hire-A-Youth
Summer Internship Program in collaboration with the Neighborhood
House Association and the Human Resources-Equal Opportunity/Staff
Affirmative Action Division. The purpose of this program is to
provide work-training positions for students, ages 14-16, who
come from economically disadvantaged families. UCSD assumes
responsibility for providing training and supervision for each
youth at no direct cost to the University. The application
deadline is July 6, 1999.

The tentative work schedule begins the week of July 12, 1999.
The final work day will be in mid-August depending upon the
work option selected (3 or 6 weeks). The youths are paid
minimum wage by the Neighborhood House Association.

A few changes have been made to the program this year. One
major change is that there are two options for the number
of hours a youth can work in a department. The other
change is that the youths will be required to attend a
work-readiness training session weekly which will be
explained in the supervisor's orientation.

The work options are:

A. Regular Academic Year Students:
Youths will work a minimum of 210 hours - 35 hours
per week (for approximately 6 weeks)

B. Year-Round School Students:
Youths will work a minimum of 90 hours - 30 hours
  per week (for 3 weeks)

As in prior years, it is a requirement of the program that
all supervisors who have requested students attend a
supervisors' orientation. Please plan to have the supervisor
and an alternate supervisor attend this orientation in the
event of absence this summer. This orientation will be held
Tuesday, June 29, 1999 at 1:00 p.m. at the Price Center-
Santa Barbara/Los Angeles Room. Updated information on this
year's program will be provided by the Neighborhood House
Association as well as the coordinator for the program on
campus. Orientation attendance is required to be considered
an eligible work site.

If you are interested in helping young people successfully
enter the world of work by participating this summer, please
complete the attached job opportunity application and e-mail
it to Linda Olvera (lolvera@ucsd.edu). If you have more than
one location, please complete a separate form for each
location. Please note that your application must be received
no later Tuesday, July 6, 1999. If you have any questions,
please call (858)534-3694.
