OFFICE OF THE CHANCELLOR
June 25, 1999
ALL AT UCSD
SUBJECT: | Health Sciences Administration |
It is with sincere gratitude for his many years of distinguished service
that I announce that Vice Chancellor for Health Sciences and Dean of the
School of Medicine John F. Alksne, M.D., will be returning full time to his
position as professor of neurosurgery, on August 1. An Interim Vice
Chancellor and Dean will be named shortly.
A highly regarded neurosurgeon and member of our faculty since 1971, Dr.
Alksne was asked to accept the positions of Dean and Vice Chancellor in
1992. He has provided thoughtful, steady guidance of our medical school and
health care system during a tumultuous era for the medical industry, and a
time of growth and change for UCSD's teaching, research and patient care
enterprises. We have benefited greatly from his intelligence, vision and
dedication to advancing health sciences' missions. He has laid the
groundwork for our future; I will count on his counsel in the years to come.
In the coming weeks, in consultation with the Academic Senate and others, I
will appoint a committee to conduct a nationwide search for a new leader who
will build upon the Health Sciences' educational, research and clinical
strengths. I am committed to ensuring that the School of Medicine not only
continues to fulfill its vital regional and national role, but that its
potential as a unique, world-class institution is fully realized.
