KEY ADMINISTRATORS/KEY SUPPORT STAFF

SUBJECT:    Associate Vice Chancellor-Student Affairs, A. W. Russ

It is with a sense of deep personal loss that I announce that A. W. Russ has decided not to accept his annual reappointment as Associate Vice Chancellor-Student Affairs.

A. W. officially retired from the University of California in December 1994. At my requests he agreed to return on an annual reappointment basis in order to continue our momentum toward a number of strategic goals for Student Affairs.

A. W. began his University of California career in 1959 at UCLA. In 1970, he joined UCSD as Assistant to the Provost of Third College (now Marshall College), five months prior to the actual enrollment of the first Third College students. As a senior administrative staff member in Third College, A. W. played a critical role in the opening and development of Third College. In 1981, A. W. transferred to Student Affairs and has been central to the development and achievements of Student Affairs over the past two decades.

A. W.'s effectiveness, experiences, insights, wisdom, and friendship will be greatly missed. He is truly irreplaceable.

I am certain that his many friends and colleagues at UCSD and throughout the UC system join me in expressing gratitude for his 40 years of dedicated service and contributions to the University of California, and wish him great joy and happiness in an active retirement.
