SUBJECT:   EAP-OPENING FOR ASSOCIATE DIRECTOR-ACADEMIC AFFAIRS

The Education Abroad Program (EAP) of the University of California is seeking an Associate Director, Academic Affairs (ADAA). EAP is an academic program on each of the nine campuses of the University. It annually sends over 2000 UC students abroad to study at more than 120 partner institutions in some 35 countries. Its instruction spans twenty foreign languages. Each year the University hosts approximately 750 international students from EAP partner institutions.

Within a Universitywide program and office that stresses consultative and collaborative planning and decision-making, the ADAA leads in formulating, promulgating, interpreting and promoting consistent and even handed standards of academic quality and rigor across programs. Consistent with these overall goals, the ADAA promotes efficiency, timeliness and responsiveness in day to day course approval, grading and petition processes. The ADAA position reports to EAP's Universitywide Director and serves as the "instructor of record" for EAP programs with final responsibility for the determination of course grades.

The ADAA provides leadership in the generation of academic policy, development of new and revision of existing instructional programs and the administration of academic personnel processes such as the recruitment of Study Center Directors. In so doing, the ADAA works closely with the Academic Senate's University Committee on the Education Abroad Program (UCEAP).

The ADAA must be a tenured member of the UC Academic Senate. He or she may be a current faculty member or recent retiree. Previous experience with EAP on a campus or abroad is a plus but not a prerequisite.

The appointment is for a two-year term, subject to a possible renewal for a second two-year term by mutual agreement with the Universitywide Director.

The appointment is for the academic years 2000-2001 and 2001-2002, and commences July 1, 2000.
