ACADEMIC SENATE MEMBERS

SUBJECT:    Task Force on the Faculty Review Process

We are pleased to announce that a joint Senate/Administration task force has been established to evaluate the faculty review process. A great strength of our academic personnel review process is faculty peer review. To assure that this system of shared governance remains fair, objective, consistent, and timely, it should undergo periodic evaluation. The goal is to analyze ways in which the integrity of our system can be maintained while identifying practices that will enable the campus to improve the quality and timeliness of reviews. This effort should serve to benefit individual faculty members and academic departments in the preparation of personnel files as well as aid campus reviewers in the processing of these files.

The charge to the task force is to examine the following issues and make recommendations on ways to improve the faculty review process:

  1. The organization and content of faculty review files, including the bibliographic format for reporting work;

  2. File reviewers, including ad hoc committees, by type of personnel action;

  3. Timeliness of appointment and retention actions; and

  4. Automation of academic personnel processes
The following individuals have agreed to serve as the task force:

Professor Georgios Anagnostopoulos, Philosophy
MSO Karen Andrews, Physics
Vice Chancellor and Dean Richard Attiyeh
Professor Colin Bloor, Pathology/SOM
Professor Terry Jernigan, Psychiatry/SOM, Co-Chair
Associate Vice Chancellor David Miller, Co-Chair
Professor Larry Milstein, Electrical and Computer Engineering
Professor Carol Plantamura, Music
Professor Richard Salmon, Pord/SIO
Professor Debbie Spector, Biology
Professor William Trogler, Chemistry & Biochemistry
