June 23, 2000

KEY ADMINISTRATORS/KEY SUPPORT STAFF (Excluding UCSD Healthcare)

SUBJECT:  The Summer YouthForce 2000 Program

The Summer YouthForce Internship Program (formerly known as the Hire-A-Youth Program) seeks UCSD departments to provide work-training positions for economically disadvantaged youth ages 14 -17, in an effort to help these youth successfully enter the world of work. The program is a collaboration between the Neighborhood House Association and UCSD. The work schedule begins July 10, 2000. The youth will work 35 hours per week for six weeks with the final workday in mid August.

The purpose of this program is to provide work-training positions for students. UCSD departments assume responsibility for providing training and supervision for each youth at no direct cost to the University. The youth are paid minimum wage by the Neighborhood House Association.

A requirement of the program is that all supervisors who have requested youth attend a supervisor orientation. This orientation will be held on Tuesday, June 27, 2000 in 111A (Chancellors Complex) from 9:00 a.m. - 10:00 a.m. The Neighborhood House Association representative and the Campus Coordinator will provide information on the program.

If you are interested in making a positive impact on the community by helping a youth successfully enter the world of work, you can do so by participating in this program. Please submit your application to Equal Opportunity/Staff Affirmative Action office at 10280 North Torrey Pines Road, Suite 370 or by campus mail to mail code 0923. The deadline for applications is July 6, 2000. You should also plan to have a supervisor and an alternate attend the orientation session indicated above. If you have any questions, please contact Linda Olvera, (858) 534-3694.
