KEY ADMINISTRATORS/KEY SUPPORT STAFF

SUBJECT:  Reorganization of Student Affirmative Action and Human Relations Program

The Student Affirmative Action and Human Relations Program (SAA & HR Program) was created in 1985 as a result of an expansion of the Student Affirmative Action Program. However, in response to campus and UC policy changes in these two complementary, but distinct, areas, and in anticipation of the planned growth in campus enrollment, the SAA & HR Program has been divided into two independent functional areas as described below to achieve clarity of purpose and mission between the student affirmative action and the human relations areas currently under the SAA & HR Program. The two programs resulting from this reorganization are:

STUDENT OFFICE OF HUMAN RELATIONS (SOHR)

Julia Adame has been re-assigned to the position of Director for the Student Office of Human Relations (SOHR). Director Adame will provide management oversight of SOHR. Among other things, she will also monitor and assess campus programs, practices and procedures to maximize achievement by UC/UCSD of a student oriented, positive and nurturing, learning environment that promotes understanding and acceptance of diversity in the UC/UCSD community; develop and implement a broad educational program for UCSD students, staff, and faculty in student oriented human/race relations, cultural pluralism, hate/bias prevention education; and serve as the campus contact for any student related hate/bias crimes or incidents, and complaints of unlawful discrimination involving UCSD students.

You may contact SOHR Director Adame at (858) 534-5661. SOHR will be located on the ground floor in Student Center Building B on the main campus.

STUDENT AFFIRMATIVE ACTION AND EDUCATION EQUITY (SAA & EE) PROGRAM

The Student Affirmative Action and Education Equity (SAA&EE) Program will be administered by the SAA & EE Program Coordinator. Among other duties and responsibilities, the SAA & EE Program Coordinator will be responsible for monitoring and assessing campus programs, practices and procedures to maximize achievement of a diverse student body at UCSD that reflects the California population; developing constructive remedies and plans for change to achieve the UCSD goals of increasing the presence of historically underrepresented student groups in the UCSD student body; providing staff support, research, and technical assistance for Student Affairs/Academic Affairs administrative units, work groups, or advisory committees in areas relating to student affirmative action/education equity/equal education opportunity. The SAA & EE Coordinator will also establish and maintain a database and distribute information on the recent legal and policy developments in the listed areas, and will serve as the campus contact for campus and UC-wide officials, programs, and groups in matters relating to affirmative action, diversity, education equity, and equal educational opportunity.

The SAA & EE Program Coordinator position is vacant. A search is currently underway to fill that post as soon as possible. Until this position is filled, any questions regarding this area may be directed to Nick Aguilar, Director, Student Policies and Judicial Affairs at (858) 534-6225.

This reorganization is effective as of August 1, 2000. Please feel free to contact me with any questions regarding this reorganization.
