SUBJECT:  Appointment of Director, Housing and Dining Services

I am pleased to announce that Mark Cunningham has been selected as the new Director of Housing and Dining Services. Mr. Cunningham will begin his duties on January 1, 2001, replacing Larry Barrett who will be retiring.

Larry Barrett served the University of California system for over thirty-six years, beginning in 1964 at the University of California, Santa Barbara. Larry moved to the San Diego campus in 1972, and was promoted to the Director position in 1973. I want to express sincere appreciation to Mr. Barrett, who provided steady leadership and management expertise during his tenure.

Over a span of twenty years at UCSD, Mr. Cunningham has served in a number of housing positions, beginning with the residential life program at Warren College in 1980. He joined the Housing Department in 1982 and over the years increased his responsibilities to include undergraduate, graduate and faculty and staff housing, conference services and catering. In addition, he has served on a variety of campuswide committees and programs including Sharecase, Mid-Management Council, Employee of the Year selection committee, Transportation Policy Committee, among others. He is currently chairing the UC Management and Leadership 2000 Conference to convene in December 2000. In addition to his campuswide activities, Mr. Cunningham is affiliated with a number of professional organizations in which he is actively involved.

Please welcome Mark Cunningham to his new position. I know he will be dedicated to maintaining the high level of service provided to our students, and his enthusiasm and energy will serve the campus well in this era of anticipated campus growth.
