ALL ACADEMICS AND STAFF AT UCSD

SUBJECT:    Grand Opening for Clics: Center for Library & Istructional Computing Services

Ribbon Cutting:
On Wednesday, October 11 at 10:30 a.m., all faculty, staff, and students are invited to join Chancellor Robert Dynes, Senior Vice Chancellor Marsha Chandler, University Librarian Brian Schottlaender, CLICS Director Kari Lucas, and Associated Students President Doc Khalegi at Galbraith Hall, Revelle Plaza, as they officially open CLICS: Center for Library & Instructional Computing Services with a ribbon-cutting ceremony.

Live Swing Music with Big Time Operator:
After the ribbon cutting, ultimate swing band Big Time Operator swings into action from 11:30-1:30 p.m. They play classic swing as well as new swing tunes, and dancers from the UCSD Dancesports Team and the Ballroom Dance Club will be joining the party and entertaining us with some hot, fun moves.

Food and Raffle:
Great snacks, drinks, and dessert will be provided. Outstanding prizes will be raffled, but you must be present to win.

Background:
The first new library opened at UCSD in 15 years, CLICS will provide library resources, instructional computing, and distance learning through a program of three-way collaboration between the UCSD Libraries, Academic Computing, and the Media Center. CLICS provides a unique, comfortable spot for students from all colleges to do their work, study, and relax. There will be 172 computers available for the Web, email, work processing, and other uses, plus group study rooms. Library instructors are available to come into classes, give hands-on sessions at CLICS, or sit down one-on-one with students to give research tips and help with projects. CLICS will offer four on-site paper-based collections to supplement electronic access to resources. A 2,500 volume reference collection is shaped to meet the needs of the college writing programs. A 300-volume computer resource collection will support students as they become fluent in current technology. There will also be a 50-title journal and newspaper collection and a 2,000 volume currrent awareness non-fiction and fiction collection to match most closely the interests of UCSD's undergraduates and to support ideas introduced to them in the classroom. To give students a break, CLICS offers campus's newest coffee and snack cart right outside the doors.

Galbraith Renovation:
Galbraith Hall was constructed in 1965, one of the first new buildings on the UCSD campus. It operated as the University Library until the occupancy of the current Geisel Library building in 1972. A branch undergraduate library remained on a portion of the upper two floors. This library served UCSD students until it closed two years ago, part of an $11 million renovation of Galbraith Hall. Now ready to re-open as the first new UC library of the 21st century, CLICS will bring together the ideas, services, and technology that students need to be productive and competitive.
