SUBJECT:  Implementation of the UCSD Personal Floating Holiday

In 1998, as a component of the Office of the President's efforts to encourage promotion of work/life efforts, I acknowledged my support of University-sponsored programs that help us to manage our professional and personal lives.

At the same time, I encouraged the campus community to continue to seek creative ways to promote and support work/life programs and services at UCSD.

As a result, I am pleased to announce the implementation of the UCSD Personal Floating Holiday effective January 1, 2001. The Personal Holiday replaces the Spring Administrative Holiday and provides for time off with pay at the discretion of eligible employees with supervisory approval. Personal time off must be taken prior to the end of the calendar year in a single absence, and cannot be paid off or rolled-over to the next calendar year.

The Personal Holiday will provide members of the campus community the flexibility of scheduling time off that is personally meaningful, compliments outreach and recruitment efforts for both faculty and staff, and supports flexible work scheduling and quality of work/life. The Personal Floating Holiday is available to those who were previously eligible for the Spring Administrative Holiday in accordance with respective Academic Personnel Policies, Staff Personnel Policies, and Collective Bargaining Agreements.

The UCSD Implementing Procedure, 40/Holidays, has been revised to incorporate the Personal Holiday and to define related eligibility criteria. Procedure 40/Holidays is accessible on the Human Resources website at:
