ALL STUDENTS AT UCSD

SUBJECT:  UCSD's Fortieth Anniversary

The 2000-2001 academic year marks UCSD's 40th Anniversary. In honor of this event, the campus will sponsor a series of activities to celebrate the Board of Regents' action on November 18, 1960, officially creating the University of California, San Diego. The major focus of the celebration is UCSD's service to the San Diego community.

I invite all faculty, staff and students to join me for an anniversary cake-cutting ceremony at 12 noon on November 17, in the Price Center Plaza. Also on November 17, the faculty, staff and students who sponsor service projects in the community will be honored at an afternoon reception, and a "memory wall" will be unveiled outside the Price Center Ballroom, exhibiting photos of UCSD from 1960 to the present.

The November 16 Union-Tribune will include an insert describing UCSD's more than 250 service programs plus a list of 40 special "gifts" of public service which our faculty, staff and students are contributing this year in appreciation for the community's 40 years of support. Copies of this publication, "UCSD & You," also will be available from the University Communications Office.

As we commemorate our past, we also look ahead to a bright future for our campus and our community. You will help shape that future. I hope you will take every opportunity to join me in this celebration of our legacy, our service to the community, and our achievements yet to come.
