SUBJECT:    Search for the Director of the Center for Magnetic Recording Research

After nine years of dedicated service and superb leadership, Professor Sheldon Schultz has submitted his resignation as Director of the Center for Magnetic Recording Research (CMRR) effective June 30, 2000. I have appointed the following individuals to serve as the committee to search for the new director :

David Miller, Associate Vice Chancellor-Academic Affairs, Chair Walter Burkhard, Computer Science and Engineering James Lemke, Electrical and Computer Engineering Brian Maple, Physics Michael Sailor, Chemistry and Biochemistry Jack Wolf, Electrical and Computer Engineering Edward Yu, Electrical and Computer Engineering

The CMRR Director is the academic and administrative head of the Center and is responsible for providing leadership and direction for the Center's scientific, educational, and industrial liaison activities and for overseeing the administrative and managerial activities of the Center. The search for the CMRR Director is limited to tenured UCSD faculty. The appointment will be for five years and may be renewed after appropriate review.

Applications and nominations are invited for the CMRR Directorship and may be submitted to Chair David Miller by letter addressed "In confidence" and mailed to Mail Code 0001 or by electronic mail tocmrrdirsearch@ucsd.edu. Applications and nominations received by March 10, 2000, will receive full consideration by the Search Committee.
