SUBJECT:    Establishment of the Center for Human Development

Following consultation with the Academic Senate and campus administrative officials, I am pleased to announce the establishment of the Center for Human Development as an Organized Research Unit reporting to Vice Chancellor Richard Attiyeh. Professor Joan Stiles will serve as its first Director.

The Center for Human Development (CHD) is an interdisciplinary, research-centered unit designed to meet the growing needs for interdisciplinary exchange on issues related to human development. The Center is organized around five structurally distinct components, but with integrated functions: (1) research support and infrastructure, (2)enrichment of human development's instructional counterparts - the undergraduate Human Development Program and a proposed interdisciplinary graduate program, (3) dissemination activities focused on but not limited to local community needs, (4) public policy analysis, and (5) assessment activities. In addition, the Center serves as a focal point for research, evaluation, and assessment activities associated with the campus-wide Center for Research in Educational Equity, Assessment, and Teaching Excellence (CREATE). Membership in the Center is open to all interested faculty members and research scientists/scholars.

Professor Stiles may be reached atjstiles@ucsd.edu, mail code 0515, telephone 42567.
