March 15, 2000 ALL ACADEMIC SENATE MEMBERS SUBJECT: All University Commencement Ceremonies-June 17, 2000 As you know, Dr. Maya Angelou will address UCSD's graduating class of 2000 at the All University Commencement Ceremonies on Saturday, June 17, at 10:00 a.m., at the RIMAC Field. Dr. Angelou, a poet, historian, author, actress, playwright, producer, director, civil-rights activist, and advocate for the betterment and education of children will be the fourth keynote speaker since a tradition of all-campus commencements started in 1997. All faculty members are invited to take part in this unified campus commencement by marching in an academic procession that will precede the graduating students. Your presence at the all campus graduation is an important symbolic display of appreciation of the success attained by our graduating students and of good wishes for their continuing success, and I am writing to encourage your participation. All participants in the faculty procession will need to wear academic regalia. Many of you have been designated as official commencement participants in one of the College, SOM, or Graduate ceremonies and may have already placed orders for caps and gowns. Other faculty have their own academic regalia. Those of you who wish to march in the faculty procession who have NOT already made arrangements for caps and gowns will need to order your academic regalia directly from the UCSD Bookstore, NO LATER THAN 3:30 p.m., on Monday, April 10. Please identify yourself as a member of the "Faculty Commencement Processional Group". There is no cost to you for the rental fee. Orders may be placed as follows: The following information must be provided at the time an order is placed: (e.g., Yale, New Haven, CT) Faculty who plan to participate in BOTH the School of Medicine's June 4 graduation ceremonies AND the June 17 academic procession should retain their caps and gowns after the SOM commencement. Detailed information concerning tickets and time and location for assembly will be provided at a later date. I hope you will elect to be present for the celebration in honor of all campus graduates, and I look forward to seeing all of you there on June 17.
