SUBJECT:    UCSD's Fortieth Anniversary Celebration

On November 18, 1960, the Board of Regents of the University of California established this campus as the University of California, San Diego. In an anniversary speech twenty-five years later, former UC President Clark Kerr noted that "the advance of UCSD to a peak position among the 3,200 institutions of higher education in the United States is one of the few academic marvels of all history."

By most measures of academic excellence, that marvel continues to this day. UCSD now can reflect on forty remarkable years of growth in quality, strength and breadth. To mark this achievement, I am designating the academic year 2000-2001 as a celebration of UCSD's 40th anniversary.

In acknowledgement of the contributions UCSD faculty, staff and students have made to the nation and this region, the theme of community service will be a major focus of the anniversary celebration. Through its extensive outreach efforts the UCSD community has shown that a great academic institution is also a caring institution which values its mission of public service. To thank the San Diego community for its support and to promote our public service initiatives, forty "gifts" of service to the community will be highlighted during the anniversary year.

All members of the campus community will be invited to participate in the 40th Anniversary activities. Under the auspices of the Vice Chancellor for External Relations, James Langley, the UCSD Marketing Council has undertaken the early planning for the celebration. The Council welcomes the input, assistance and participation of campus members who would like to join in this effort. To volunteer or obtain information, please contact Lynne Peterson, co-chair of the 40th Anniversary Committee. Throughout this milestone year, her committee will make every effort to keep the campus community apprised of Anniversary activities.
