SUBJECT:    The UCSD Office of Admissions and Outreach Hosts Admit Day 2000

Admitted freshmen and their families will "Discover UCSD!" on Admit Day 2000, Saturday, April 15, from 8:00 a.m. until 3:30 p.m. This event is an opportunity to showcase the UCSD campus, its academic departments, services and student organizations during the students' important college decision-making period. Admit Day is expected to draw more than 8,000 visitors to UCSD for the day to attend presentations on a variety of university-related topics, visit their undergraduate college, talk with students and faculty, and tour the campus. The event is co-sponsored by the Office of Admissions and Outreach and Associated Students of UCSD.

The day will open with a series of Welcome Sessions led by Assistant Vice Chancellor Richard Backer and Director of Admissions & Outreach Mae Brown. Visitors will also be greeted at each Welcome Session by Vice Chancellor of Student Affairs, Joseph Watson; and Terrence Patterson and Jennifer Lee, Associated Students Vice Presidents. The five undergraduate colleges will then host guests in college overview sessions designed to introduce students and their parents to the college and its academic and extracurricular opportunities. Chancellor Robert Dynes will personally greet visitors in a "Meet the Chancellor" session from 8:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. in the Price Center Plaza. Campus tours and residence hall tours will be held throughout the day, along with tours of RIMAC, and various academic departments. From 9:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m., prospective students can meet representatives from student clubs and organizations along Library Walk.

Academic departments and student services will join the Information Fair from 11:00 a.m. to 2:45 p.m. Ongoing information sessions in Center Hall will cover housing and dining services, money matters, majors, athletics and campus life. Faculty members from a variety of departments will discuss academic expectations, the many ways that students and faculty can interact, and opportunities for student involvement in faculty research.

"Admit Day is a very important day for the university. It is an invaluable opportunity for admitted students and their parents to meet with our faculty, staff, students and college administrators," says Mae Brown, UCSD's Director of Admissions and Outreach. "And for the campus community, the day provides us with the opportunity to show these students why UCSD is ranked so highly in national polls. Many students have told us that they made the decision to attend UCSD based on their positive experiences during Admit Day."

The five colleges will host the following activities in conjunction with Admit Day to highlight college life: Thurgood Marshall College - Cultural Celebration; Eleanor Roosevelt College College information tables and entertainment; John Muir College "Welcome to the Jungle" festivities; Earl Warren College Information Fair and entertainment; and Revelle "Aloha Revelle.
