SUBJECT:  Wireless Data Network at UCSD

Recent advances in wireless data network technologies now make it possible to deploy such networks widely on the UCSD campus. The careful coordination of such networks will have many advantages, including the ability to be connected to the Internet using laptops or handheld devices from many unwired campus locations. For example, when implemented, authorized campus users will be able to check their email or surf the Internet while sitting on the grass between buildings or having coffee at the Grove.

The expected proliferation of wireless communications products in the next few years and the resulting likelihood of interference among them, make it essential that wireless activities on the UCSD campus be coordinated. To that end, and in order to develop the appropriate policies and procedures, we recently established a campuswide taskforce. The taskforce is addressing a variety of issues, including hardware selection, security, interference, device registration, pilot project, and more. The membership of the taskforce is included below. Given the importance of coordination in this area, we encourage you to contact your technical coordinator or a member of this taskforce before making any purchase or implementation decision of wireless networks.
