SUBJECT:  Energy Savings Update

During the thirty-day period of mid-January through mid-February, we are pleased to report that the Campus energy conservation efforts have resulted in an energy savings of over 10%. This reduction in energy use by the campus helped keep the lights on for electricity users statewide.

The UC San Diego Campus is the third largest user of electricity within San Diego Gas & Electric's territory and ranks number ten among its natural gas customers.

The economic value of this cost savings to the campus is over $8,000 per day at today's energy prices.

You have heard that the State electric system operator (CAISO) has currently declared a Stage 1 emergency rather than the Stage 3 emergencies that we have experienced for twenty-nine consecutive days. Although this is very good news, it certainly does not mean that the State's energy crisis is over. In reality, we are in the "eye of the storm," with every expectation that our conservation efforts in the days ahead, and especially during the summer months, will be even more important. Our efforts to conserve energy at all times, and to reduce campus loads especially during peak use periods, will be essential to ensure continued reliable service throughout the State.
