SUBJECT:  Review of the Proposed Revisions to the University
                     of California Whistleblower Policies

In June 2000, a Notice was issued to advise the campus community about state legislation that renamed the "Reporting of Improper Governmental Activities" as the "California Whistleblower Protection Act," and expanded the classification of people who are protected from retaliation. At that time, a Universitywide Task Force was reviewing the following Policies, which together implement the state law:

* The University of California Policy on Reporting and Investigating Known or Suspected Improper Governmental Activities (the Whistleblower Policy), and

*The Policy for Protection of Whistleblowers and Guidelines for Reviewing Retaliation Complaints (the Whistleblower Protection from Retaliation Policy).

Substantial revisions have been made to the two University Policies in response to comments received during the June 2000 Universitywide administrative review and the efforts of the Task Force. Background information to clarify the need for the proposed Policy revisions and the California Whistleblower Statute are contained in the Task Force's Report. The revised UC Policies and the Task Force Report are accessible at http://www.ucop.edu/humres/wbpage.html

The UCSD community is invited to review and provide comments regarding the proposed revisions to the University's Whistleblower Policies. Comments may be submitted through Wednesday, May 9, 2001, to Jonnie Craig-Winston, Human Resources Department Director of Policy Development and Quality of Work/Life at jcraig@ucsd.edu or (858) 534-9659.
