ALL ACADEMICS AT UCSD

SUBJECT:  Associate Vice Chancellor - Undergraduate Education

I am pleased to announce the creation of the position Associate Vice Chancellor Undergraduate Education (AVC-UE). This is the result of broad consultation and endorsement by the Program Review Committee, the Academic Senate, and faculty from across the General Campus. Similar positions exist at virtually all of the other UC campuses. Given our expected growth, the AVC-UE will play a key role in UCSD's future.

Presently, numerous initiatives and programs are put forward to coordinate and improve undergraduate education, and they are handled on an ad hoc basis. Additional opportunities are simply passed up due to the absence of a central voice for undergraduate education. This lack of appropriate coordination will become a more serious issue as the campus continues to grow.

The Associate Vice Chancellor Undergraduate Education will help to fill this gap, providing leadership and promoting excellence and innovation in undergraduate education across colleges, divisions, schools and disciplines. The AVC-UE's responsibilities will include, for example:

Undergraduate enrollment management
Classroom upgrading and utilization
Summer Session
Transfer students
Evaluation of teaching at the undergraduate level
Facilitation of development of new interdisciplinary programs
Oversight of the Instructional Improvement Program
Accreditation
Liaison with the Academic Senate, Council of Provosts, and
Student Affairs

I would very much appreciate your nominations (including self-nominations) of potential candidates for the position of AVC-UE. Please send suggestions to me at mchandler@ucsd.edu by May 23, 2001. I would like the appointment to start this summer.
