SUBJECT:  Change in Leadership in Department of Radiology,
                     School of Medicine

George R. Leopold, M.D., retired June 30 after many years of distinguished service as Chair of Radiology. I want to express my gratitude for his extraordinary contributions to UCSD as a founding member of the School of Medicine faculty and as a senior academic leader. By his own example as an accomplished clinician, respected educator and pioneer in his field, he has set the highest professional standards for achievement among his students and peers. Dr. Leopold, who continues to be active as Professor Emeritus, joined the UCSD faculty in 1968 and was named Chair in 1985. A leader in the field of radiology, and in the development and application of ultrasound in patient care, Dr. Leopold has received Gold Medals from the American Roentgen Ray Society, the American College of Radiology and the Association of University Radiologists. He has been widely honored as a teacher, researcher and clinician, and under his chairmanship the UCSD Department of Radiology has achieved a national reputation for excellence.

I am pleased to announce the appointment of Anne C. Roberts, M.D., as Interim Chair of Radiology. A national search for a permanent Chair is underway.

Dr. Roberts, Professor of Clinical Radiology and Chief of Vascular and Interventional Radiology, has been a member of the faculty since 1987. She also is a Staff Physician at the Veterans Administration Medical Center. She has served as President of the Society of Cardiovascular and Interventional Radiology and the Western Angiographic and Interventional Society, and is a fellow of the American College of Radiology, the Society of Cardiovascular and Interventional Radiology, the Cardiovascular and Interventional Radiological Society of Europe, and the Council on Cardiovascular Radiology of the American Heart Association. She spent a year on sabbatical with the Food and Drug Administration Office of Device Evaluation, and was appointed to the FDA's Circulatory Devices Panel. She has recently been elected as a Trustee of the American Board of Radiology. She earned her M.D. at UCSD and conducted her post-graduate training at Massachusetts General Hospital and Cedars-Sinai Medical Center.
