SUBJECT:  Appointment of Director, Environment, Health & Safety

I am pleased to announce the appointment of Stephen K. Benedict as the new Director of Environment, Health & Safety. Mr. Benedict will begin his duties on August 20, 2001, replacing Martha Mc Dougall who retired July 31.

Over a span of eighteen years of dedicated service at UCSD, Martha Mc Dougall served in several EH&S positions, with the last fourteen years as the Director of Environment, Health and Safety. Under her leadership, EH&S has been committed to the health and safety of the campus community, addressing safety issues within a rapidly changing regulatory environment. Under her direction, the UCSD Environment, Health and Safety Department received national recognition.

Mr. Benedict served most recently as the Director of the Environment, Health and Safety Department at Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center, a nationally recognized research institution. He brings with him extensive experience and education in the practical management of health and safety, addressing the complexity of regulatory compliance, and building an effective teamwork environment.

During the interim, Van Jahnes-Smith, Associate Director of Environment, Health and Safety, will serve as Acting Director and may be reached at (858) 534-3782 or jahnes-v@ucsd.edu.
