SUBJECT:  UCSD Office of Campus Counsel

Effective July 1, 2001, the Office of Campus Counsel under the direction of Ann Parode has been transferred to a direct reporting relationship to the Office of the Chancellor. Ms. Parode will maintain her joint reporting relationship to the University General Counsel in Oakland.

This change of reporting responsibility on campus is to ensure that all campus units recognize and take advantage of the legal resources available to UCSD. It is intended to contribute to increased campus effectiveness in maintaining compliance with applicable laws and regulations, an important aspect of carrying out UCSD's educational and research missions.

The Office of Campus Counsel was established five years ago as an on-campus source of legal advice to the campus on applicable laws and regulations, institutional policy, decision-making, and legal problem solving. Campus Counsel has become a valuable resource in identifying and addressing problems on campus where legal advice is needed. The Campus Counsel is a member of the General Counsel's office and services as the principal conduit for engaging legal expertise from members of that office in Oakland. It also provides legal services of an appropriate nature locally, including advice, consultation, and coordination on the full range of legal issues affecting the campus other than those handled directly by attorneys in Oakland. Under campus procedures, senior staff and faculty administrators have direct access to the Campus Counsel to meet the legal needs of their units. Other personnel should work through their supervisors to secure appropriate legal review of policies, projects, and problems.
