SUBJECT:  Proposed Changes to Student Wages

Although there is no general range adjustment for non-exclusively represented Staff titles during 2001-02, a proposal is being made to increase the salary ranges for the student classifications of Assistant II-IV (Title Codes 4919-4921). Consistent with the upcoming increase to the state minimum wage effective January 1, 2002, the minimum of the Assistant II range will increase to $6.75/hour. As a result of recent increases to the minimum wage, the Assistant series ranges are no longer in alignment. Therefore, a range realignment is also proposed as follows:

4922 Assistant I no longer in use
4921 Assistant II $6.75 - $9.00/hour
4920 Assistant III $7.25 - $12.00/hour
4919 Assistant IV $10.00 - $20.00/hour

These classifications have "By-Agreement" rates. Therefore, individuals do not receive an automatic rate increase unless an increase is required to bring their rate up to the minimum of the range established for the class. The rate paid to individuals in these classes may be adjusted within the range at the discretion of the department, upon completion of the required twelve months on pay status. For those who reach the required twelve months on pay status on or after October 1, 2001, the increase may be any amount up to 2.0%.

The proposed effective date for the above-mentioned range adjustment is January 1, 2002 for student employees paid monthly and December 23, 2001 for student employees paid biweekly. Students or other interested parties who would like to comment on the proposed changes may do so by submitting written or electronic mail comments by November 16, 2001 to:

Phyllis Walker, Assistant Director Career Services
Job Opportunities Program, Mail Code 0335 mailto:pfwalker@ucsd.edu

OR

Student employees should be made aware of this announcement. The comments received during this consultation period will be carefully considered prior to final decisions being made.
