Iberian and Latin American Studies and Latin American Studies
                     Instructional Programs

It is with great pleasure that I announce that Professor Charles Briggs has been appointed as Director of the Center for Iberian and Latin American Studies and Director of the Latin American Studies instructional programs effective November 15, 2001. While Professor Briggs is on sabbatical, Professor Leon Zamosc is serving as Interim Director for the period October 1, 2001, through September 22, 2002.

Professor Briggs has been a member of the faculty of the Department of Ethnic Studies since 1995. Educated as an anthropologist at the University of Chicago, his recent work has explored public health institutions in Venezuela, joint use agreements between a Venezuelan oil conglomerate and transnational oil companies and their effects on civil society, criminal prosecutions of Venezuelan women, and legal reform.

Professor Zamosc came to UCSD's Sociology Department in 1985. His research focuses on Latin American social history and peasant political participation. He teaches on social change, development issues, rural sociology, social movements and Latin American societies.

Please join me in welcoming Professors Briggs and Zamosc as the new leaders of the Center for Iberian and Latin American Studies.
