SUBJECT: Increase in Sales and Use Tax Rate The State Board of Equalization has announced that effective January 1, 2002, the California Sales and Use Tax rate of 7.50% will increase by 1/4 percent. The increase in the state rate will result in a combined rate, including county and district taxes, of 7.75% for San Diego. This rate increase occurs automatically as a result of prior legislation creating regulatory "triggers" based on excess or deficient tax revenue collections for a defined period. In this instance, the revenue collection for the defined period are projected to be less than required by the regulations, and this results in the increase in the tax rate noted above.
