SUBJECT:  Approved Changes to Student Wages

In October you were notified of proposed salary range increases for the student classifications of Assistant II-IV (Title Codes 4919-4921). These proposed increases were recently approved. Consistent with the upcoming increase to the state minimum wage, the minimum of the Assistant II range will increase to $6.75/hour and a realignment of the salary ranges will be implemented as follows:

4922 Assistant I no longer in use
4921 Assistant II $6.75 - $9.00/hour
4920 Assistant III $7.25 - $12.00/hour
4919 Assistant IV $10.00 - $20.00/hour

These classifications have "By-Agreement" rates. Therefore, individuals do not receive an automatic rate increase unless an increase is required to bring their rate up to the minimum of the range established for the class. Student rates that are active in PPS as of 12/13/01, and set below the new range minimums shown above, will be centrally adjusted to the new minimums effective 12/23/01 for students paid biweekly and 1/1/02 for students paid monthly. PPS will be updated the weekend of 12/15/01 and the new rate of pay will be reflected in the 1/16/02 biweekly and 2/1/02 monthly paychecks. A report of affected student employees will be mailed to department contacts the week of 12/17/01.

Within-range salary increases may be provided to individuals in these classes at the discretion of the department. The following criteria is provided to guide departments in determining the timing and amount of any increase they recommend.

a) In accordance with the local implementing procedure (HR-S-1) for Staff Personnel Policy 30, Salary, Section IIC, students employed in casual-restricted positions are eligible for a merit increase after completing twelve months on pay status since the most recent date of hire or last within-range increase.

b) The increase may be any amount up to a maximum of 2.0%.
