OFFICE OF THE CHANCELLOR

February 14, 2002

ALL ACADEMICS AND STAFF AT UCSD (Including UCSD Healthcare)

SUBJECT:  2002 United Way/Combined Health Agency Drive at UCSD
"The Way America Cares, Community by Community"

Please join me in supporting the UCSD United Way/CHAD Campaign. This year our theme is, "The Way America Cares, Community by Community." I believe this theme is particularly appropriate in a year in which we, as Americans, have together experienced pain and tragedy. Through our individual and collective willingness to make a difference, we have nurtured hope for the future.

As our attention returns to the needs of the San Diego community, United Way/CHAD of San Diego helps local based agencies distribute funds and other resources to the people of San Diego County. Therefore, supporting United Way/CHAD offers us the opportunity to make a difference in the lives of our neighbors.

Your gift will help support community programs to enhance senior independence, develop diverse communities, empower persons with disabilities, improve health and wellness, protect the environment, strengthen families in crisis and invest in children and youth.

The UCSD United Way/CHAD 2002 Campaign will commence on Thursday, February 14th and run through Sunday, March 17th. All UCSD faculty and staff will receive information packages through interoffice mail. You may visit the UCSD United Way/CHAD website at:
http://blink.ucsd.edu/go/unitedway

The UCSD campaign will also feature a booth at the Associated Students WinterFEST event on Thursday, February 21st and Friday, February 22nd on Library Walk, from 10:00 a.m. to 2 p.m. During these two days, the campaign will sponsor a book fair at this event, where books and other gifts will be available for purchase. A percentage of the revenue from this effort will accrue to the UCSD Campaign.

I am most proud of our campus community and I applaud those of you who volunteer time, energy and financial resources to this venture. Each of us is critical to the success of UCSD's efforts to be an active member of the San Diego community.
