SUBJECT:  Life Sciences Council

In response to recommendations from campus leaders in the life sciences, I am pleased to announce the formation of the UCSD Life Sciences Council. The Council will serve as a campus-wide advisory group intended to facilitate faculty communication, accelerate cross-campus collaborations, and provide a forum for active dialogue on the opportunities and challenges faced by UCSD in the basic and applied life sciences.

I have appointed Dean Eduardo Macagno (Biology Division) and Professor Gordon Gill (Department of Medicine) to lead the Council as co-chairs, in collaboration with John Wooley, Associate Vice Chancellor for Research. The initial membership of the Council, constituted after consultation with the Academic Senate Committee on Committees, includes 33 faculty members representing a broad spectrum of life sciences research and teaching activities across the General Campus, the School of Medicine, and Scripps Institution of Oceanography.

We have every expectation that the Life Sciences Council will prove to be a valuable campus resource in our efforts to sustain and enhance UCSD's excellence during what has often been called the Century of the Biological Sciences.
